For two decades, Red Mountain has remained one of the country’s top luxury adventure spas, and it’s easy to see why. The natural environment is first-rate: rocks so red they look painted, sun-kissed skies almost year round. The resort’s Canyon Breeze Restaurant serves low-calorie, healthy and tasty fare for almost every palate, but it’s not strict or sanctimonious (meaning, you can order wine!) There are dozens of exercise classes—including yoga, pilates, tai chi, rapelling, rock climbing—as well as mellower things like photography and meditation.

At the Sagestone Spa & Salon, you can pamper yourself with traditional and not-so-traditional treatments, like the Vibrational Sound Therapy, where Himalayan singing bowls are placed on and around the body, or a Soothing Agave Ritual, which includes a fine sea salt scrub, followed by a warming cactus gel wrap to firm and tone the skin. The finale? A hydrating agave nectar oil massage. Divine.
St. George sits geographically in the confluence of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and Mohave ecosystems, which means it’s a great spot for bird watching. Nearly 300 species of birds have been spotted in their skies, trees, canyons, and bushes, some of which can be seen in their Zen of Bird Watching class in nearby Snow Canyon State Park.
To celebrate twenty years in business, the resort has added a bunch of new offerings, including a ukulele class and a trip to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, a “no kill” animal welfare organization about an hour away. It costs $245, a percentage of which is donated to the organization.
There are also new retreats. Two of my faves:
The Self Care Essential Retreat, a 4-day, 3-night getaway which includes five treatments, including a Himalayan salt stone massage; vibrational sound therapy; cranial sacral therapy; table Thai yoga massage; and their signature treatment, the Red Mountain revitalizer (starts at $1,699 per person).
In the Sacred Sisterhood Retreat: Earthing Your Life’s Purpose (September 20-24) guests begin by exploring their current cycle of life, identifying key aspects, and then learning how to take action to achieve pure happiness. The goal is for guests to return home with a clearer vision of who they are, what they love, how best to serve themselves, and understanding why self-care is important in their daily lives.
Red Mountain Resort is about a half hour drive from St. George Municipal Airport and two hours from Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. For more information, go to RedMountainResort.com.
